A harmonica is a wind instrument which is played by blowing (or drawing) air through chambers. Reeds are located inside the chambers which vibrate and create sound according to the tuning of the instrument. Other common names for harmonica are harp and mouth organ. There are several different types of harmonica. The most common being the diatonic and chromatic. Other less common ones are the tremolo, octave, orchestral and bass.
The harmonica has found its way into all styles of music but it is particularly associated with blues, jazz, rock, folk and country. Harmonicas are available in a very wide range of differing keys. Your choice will largely depending upon the style and type of music you wish to play. Most beginners are advised to start with a harmonica in the key of C, because most learning materials are based upon this instrument.
